Ambassadors for Jesus
Committed to Learning and Growing in Him

Jumper
What's your flavor? Adventure? Excitement? Romance? This movie has it all. Yet what makes this story so wonderful, or any story in my book, are the themes being explored.
In it we are introduced to David. A young, awkward teen experiencing the typical growing pains associated with adolescence. After a run in with a high school bully, our main character discovers he has the special ability of teleporting. That's right, all he has to do is think of jumping to another place and he is there. Upon making this delightful discovery
he then uses these special powers to runaway from his humdrum life that consists of an absentee mother and an overbearing father.
With Rome, Egypt, Paris, and Hawaii just a thought away life becomes a grand adventure. David is not boggled down by the daily cares associated with having your feet planted on the ground. Afterall, why would he need to worry about things like money when he can teleport his way into a bank vault and take what he needs, and then some. As we watch our main character metamorphose from an insecure adolescent to a confident young man taking full advantage of his special abilities we are then introduced to the view from the other side. The movie then confronts the topic of how our actions can catch up with us and effect others beyond ourselves.
We are taken into the world of this young man who uses his gift to indulge in self rather than helping the less fortunate and the world at large. Yet as we all learn, David eventually discovers that there are consequences to his actions and a whole task force whose aim is to see that he pays, by bringing about his death. Heading up this task force is actor Samuel L. Jackson who will stop at nothing to fulfill his mission, claiming that only God has the right to be endowed with such powers.
Woven with the action-packed adventures are the subjects of personal giftings, self-interest, the law, our personal liberties and the abuses that can come with it. If this movie were to have a sequel it would be nice to see the progressive journey and personal responsibility explored on a larger scale.
If you are looking for a movie with a little something for the variety of flavors in your household, this one may just be it. And what a wonderful opportunity to watch some of themes in the bible come to life.
